The American College of Cardiology announced that it has joined with Heartbeat Health to promote the use of comprehensive virtual care and transform telehealth with a platform for cardiologists.
This telemedicine and virtual care platform will allow cardiologists to make informed clinical care decisions by incorporating clinical data into virtual patient communications, according to a press release from the ACC.
“To truly transform cardiovascular care and improve heart health, we must incorporate data, remote patient monitoring and outcome tracking in an easy-to-use format both the patient and the physician can use to inform shared decision-making,” John Rumsfeld, MD, PhD, FACC, chief science and quality officer and chief innovation officer of the ACC, said in the release. “Wearable health monitoring devices have evolved rapidly over the last 5 to 10 years and are now widely available. COVID-19 is a catalyst to push remote patient monitoring into the virtual care workflow.”
Clinical practices across the country have adopted telehealth to provide outpatient care during the COVID-19 pandemic to reduce in-office visits. Compared with other specialties, cardiology typically requires more inpatient testing and evaluations. With telehealth, patients and physicians can communicate through virtual care in addition to management plans, diagnostics and therapeutics, according to the release.
Heartbeat Health uses a smartphone platform to connect patients with its clinicians. This virtual solution also integrates device data and health risk assessment to develop a tailored treatment plan for a range of heart and vascular diseases. Wireless monitoring devices can connect to this platform and flag potential health risks such as volume status in HF and BP changes, according to the release.
“The world is quickly moving away from how medicine was practiced 30 years ago,” Jeff Wessler, MD, cardiologist, CEO and founder of Heartbeat Health, said in the release. “As we integrate technology and virtual care in every aspect of our patient’s heart health, we must also protect the integrity of cardiac care. The ACC guides best practices and has taken a forward-looking interest in digital transformation. There could not be a more appropriate group to set guidelines and help bring our innovative solution into the hands of those practicing cardiology across the country today.”
