Texas Children’s Hospital ranked No. 1 for pediatric cardiology and heart surgery

Texas Children’s Hospital achieved the No. 1 rank on U.S. News & World Reports list of best hospitals for pediatric cardiology and heart surgery for the fourth consecutive year.

“We are incredibly proud to be named the best place in the country for children who are in need of pediatric cardiology and heart surgery,” Daniel J. Penny, MD, chief of pediatric cardiology at Texas Children’s Hospital, told Healio. “Achieving this honor for the fourth consecutive year is a testament to our dedicated multidisciplinary team who works tirelessly to advance the field and provide the best care possible to our patients and their families. We don’t take this responsibility lightly, and these survey results only inspire us to work harder to be even better for our patients and each other every day.”

According to a press release from U.S. News & World Report, hospitals were assessed by measures that included survival, infections and surgical complications, commitment to patient safety, clinical resources, family centeredness and other objective measures of excellence. The release also noted that these rankings were not influenced by the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, which began after the data collection period had ended.

The top-ranked hospitals for pediatric cardiology and heart surgery in the 2020-2021 report are:

  1. Texas Children’s Hospital
  2. UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh
  3. Children’s Hospital Los Angeles
  4. Boston Children’s Hospital
  5. Riley Hospital for Children at IU Health
  6. Children’s Hospital Colorado
  7. Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia
  8. Ann and Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago
  9. Children’s Medical Center Dallas
  10. MUSC Children’s Heart Network of South Carolina

“Across our nation, health care professionals are striving against unprecedented challenges to provide the best possible care to each of their patients,” Ben Harder, chief of health analysis and managing editor at U.S. News and World Report, said in the release. “The nurses, doctors and other professionals at the Best Children’s Hospitals have demonstrated a track record of delivering top-notch care to children with diverse medical needs.”

Texas Children’s Hospital also took the No. 4 spot for overall 2020-2021 Best Children’s Hospitals honor roll, No. 3 in pediatric pulmonology and No. 2 in pediatric neurology and neurosurgery. Boston Children’s Hospital achieved the No. 1 overall rank.
