Canon Medical Systems USA announced the FDA granted 501(k) clearance to its image reconstruction technology that uses a deep learning algorithm.

The technology (Advanced Intelligent Clear-IQ Engine) is for use with its ultrahigh-resolution CT systems (Aquilion Precision and Aquilion One/Genesis Edition), the company stated in a press release.

The deep learning algorithm teaches the system to differentiate signal from noise and allows the CT systems to perform ultrahigh-resolution studies at doses similar to standard-resolution CT systems, according to the release.

“As we strive for precision medicine, we realize the importance of starting with the foundation of a precise diagnosis. Canon Medical is committed to developing intelligent solutions that help providers generate clearer, more holistic images to help achieve better outcomes, without increasing dose,” Tim Nicholson, acting managing director of the CT Business Unit at Canon Medical Systems USA, said in the release. “This technology represents a new era in image reconstruction, which may help provide more possibilities in improving patient care than ever before.”
