"These rankings are continued reinforcement of our caregivers’ hard work and shared sense of purpose for our patients. US News did make us aware they were going to make some changes to their methodology and we are working to better understand them.”

“We will continue to strive to make patients feel at ease when entrusting their care to us, while also remaining dedicated to the advancement of research in cardiovascular medicine,” Lars Svensson, MD, PhD, chairman of Cleveland Clinic’s Heart & Vascular Institute, said in the press release. “This is reflection of our devoted team of physicians, nurses, mid-level providers, and support staff who care for our patients.”
New this year, U.S. News updated its criteria and methodology for the 2019-20 Best Hospitals rankings. These updates included HCAHPS patient experience scores; how often patients could go directly home following hospitalization rather than a nursing home or other institutional care; an enhanced risk-adjustment model that controls for hospitals that treat sicker patients; and lastly, harmonization of outcome measurement based on the U.S. News procedures and conditions ratings.
“In the three decades since U.S. News began evaluating hospitals, we periodically have revamped our measures to enhance the decision support our rankings and ratings provide to patients,” Ben Harder, managing editor and chief of health analysis at U.S. News, said in a press release. “This year we revised the methodology to incorporate new measures of patient-centered care and to enhance how we account for differences in hospitals’ patient populations. The new model provides a more comprehensive assessment that is useful to patients, families and their medical professionals.”
In addition, Mayo Clinic has been ranked No. 1 in the U.S. News 2019-2020 Best Hospitals Honor Roll. Massachusetts General Hospital was ranked No. 2, Johns Hopkins Hospital No. 3 and Cleveland Clinic No. 4.
