For the third consecutive year, Texas Children’s Hospital received U.S. News & World Report’s No. 1 ranking as the best hospital for pediatric cardiology and heart surgery in the 2019-2020 Best Children’s Hospitals rankings.

Texas Children’s Hospital was also tied for the No. 3 rank in the publication’s overall honor roll for 2019-2020 and was also named the top hospital for pediatric pulmonology and lung surgery.

“Earning the No. 1 ranking from U.S. News & World Report for cardiology and heart surgery is a tremendous honor and inspires us to work even harder every day. These survey results demonstrate our unwavering commitment to the treatment of children and adults with congenital heart disease,” Daniel J. Penny, MD, chief of pediatric cardiology at Texas Children’s Hospital, told Cardiology Today. “It’s thrilling for our team to be recognized for the care we provide to our patients every day. Even though we received the top honor, we know there is always room for continuous improvement. That is what we are committed to every day.”

The criteria for the rankings, according to a press release from U.S. News & World Report, is measured by patient outcomes, including mortality and infection rates, commitment to patient safety, clinical resources as well as family-centeredness and other objective measures.

“While health care is rapidly changing, the objective of U.S. News’ Best Children’s Hospitals remains the same: provide families with a comprehensive and trusted starting point as they, in consultation with their doctors and other medical professionals, search for the pediatric care they need,” Ben Harder, chief of health analysis and U.S. News & World Report managing editor, said in the press release. “Our rankings, now in their 13th year, have always put parents and young patients at the front and center of our mission.”

The top-ranked hospitals for pediatric cardiology and heart surgery in the 2019-2020 report are:

1. Texas Children’s Hospital

2. Ann and Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago

3. UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh

6. Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center

7. Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and MUSC Children’s Heart Network of South Carolina (tie)

10. Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital

In the 2019 U.S. News & World Report’s Best Children’s Hospital rankings, 10 pediatric specialties were represented by 50 children’s medical centers. Boston Children’s Hospital topped the honor roll and was ranked No. 1 in five pediatric categories.

Penny said continuing to develop marquee programs centering on complex conditions as well as moving into its new home at the Lester and Sue Smith Legacy Tower will play crucial roles in providing quality pediatric cardiology treatment.

“In addition to having heart disease, many of the children we care for have additional complex cardiac issues,” Penny said. “Every day, we are improving the integrated care we are providing for these complex children.”
