In this video exclusive, George Adams, MD, highlights hot topics in vascular intervention at this year’s International Symposium on Endovascular Therapy, including issues surrounding biologic therapy, vessel preparation and cost considerations.

The topic of biologic therapies came to the forefront in a town hall session on whether paclitaxel-coated devices pose a mortality risk for patients with peripheral artery disease; recent patient-level data from pivotal and real-world studies suggest they do not, Adams, interventional cardiologist at Rex Hospital, affiliated with the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, said.

Vessel preparation was also a focus at this year’s meeting, as attendees were interested in ways to prevent complications such as dissection and recoil, while a presentation on cost issues showed that “health care providers, industry and health care administrators are trying to work together to try to develop solutions to keep costs down and provide the most effective treatments,” Adams said. “Otherwise, what will happen is that regulators will make these choices for us.”
