BOSTON — In this video exclusive, Matthew Stryker, PharmD, a clinical pharmacist who runs a free cardiovascular risk reduction service at a clinic in Albany, New York, and is a stakeholder in The Doctor-Patient Rights Project, relates a personal story of seeking prior authorization for the PCSK9 inhibitor alirocumab for a statin-intolerant patient with familial hypercholesterolemia.

Only after a fourth appeal with a federal appeals judge was the patient able to obtain the medication. Stryker describes additional resources for prescribers in the appeals process after receiving denial of an original request.
