BOSTON — In this video exclusive, Ana Barac, MD, PhD, associate professor of medicine at Georgetown University and director of the cardio-oncology program at MedStar Heart and Vascular Institute in Washington, D.C., discusses cardiovascular disease in women with breast cancer.
CVD is the second leading cause of death in women who have had breast cancer, according to Barac. The two diseases share multiple risk factors, and cancer therapies may increase CV risk.
“However, moving forward, we need to think beyond cardiac dysfunction alone,” Barac said.
Long-term follow-up and collaboration with investigators in cardiometabolic health are needed to better understand baseline risks and functional capacity in terms of overall CV risk, Barac said.
