Texas Children’s Hospital has been named the No. 1 hospital in the country for pediatric cardiology and heart surgery by the U.S. News & World Report 2018-2019 Best Children’s Hospitals rankings.
“Our second consecutive No. 1 ranking for cardiology and heart surgery is a testament to Texas Children’s Heart Center’s sustained efforts toward continuous improvement in our care of children with heart disease and their families,” Daniel J. Penny, MD, chief of pediatric cardiology at Texas Children’s Hospital, told Cardiology Today’s Intervention. “Everyone with whom I’ve spoken to about our rankings feels very, very humbled. They put their heart and soul into caring for these families and it’s wonderful to see that their efforts have once again been recognized. They will celebrate this success and then they will get back to doing what they do best — reducing the impact of heart disease on children and their families.”
According to a press release from U.S. News & World Report, the Best Children’s Hospitals methodology measures patient outcomes, including mortality and infection rates, as well as available clinical resources and compliance with best practices.
“Having a child who is born with or develops a serious illness is one of the most difficult situations a parent can face,” Ben Harder, chief of health analysis at U.S. News & World Report, said in the release. “Our Best Children’s Hospitals rankings are designed with parents and young patients in mind. By having access to the most comprehensive data available to supplement guidance from their pediatrician, families are able to make better-informed decisions about where to seek high-quality care for their children.”

Boston Children’s Hospital topped the Best Children’s Hospitals Honor Roll, which honors institutions that “deliver exceptionally high-quality care across multiple specialties,” according to the release.
According to Penny, Texas Children’s Hospital’s ranking is due to leadership, not only in terms of the amazing leaders within the hospital, but in disseminated leadership.
“We work very hard to ensure that everyone who works in our Heart Center is a leader in their individual roles as each and every member of our team is essential to providing the best care possible to the patients and families we proudly serve,” he said in an interview. “It is through this multidisciplinary, team approach to care — leading in patient care, educating the next generation of clinicians and a dedication to groundbreaking research — that elevated our program to become the best in the nation.”
