CMHC West to provide practice-changing updates on cardiometabolic health

Cardiometabolic Health Congress West, set to take place May 4 and 5 in Las Vegas, will highlight the latest updates in hypertension, HF, diabetes, lifestyle management and CV health.
The 2-day meeting, at the Wynn Las Vegas, features an agenda of keynote speakers, thought leaders, clinical education sessions and interactive lectures to present recent research in cardiometabolic health.
The Cardiometabolic Health Congress (CMHC) West agenda targets a broad range of health care professionals, including cardiologists, endocrinologists, primary care physicians, internal medicine physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants and dietitians, among others.
“CMHC West promises up-to-date information that will impact medical practices of all who attend,” meeting chair Robert H. Eckel, MD, professor of medicine in the division of cardiology and endocrinology, metabolism and diabetes; professor of physiology and biophysics; and Charles A. Boettcher II Chair in Atherosclerosis at the University of Colorado Denver Anschutz Medical Center, said in an interview. Eckel is also director of the lipid clinic at University of Colorado Hospital in Aurora and past president of the American Heart Association, said in an interview.
Sessions of interest
The CMHC West agenda focuses on four main sessions: obesity and lifestyle medicine; dyslipidemia/atherosclerosis; HF and hypertension; and diabetes management.
Case discussions will be held within each session of the meeting, and related posters will be on display in the exhibit hall.
According to Eckel, one specific area of interest surrounds indications for bariatric surgery for the treatment of type 2 diabetes.
Additionally, “in the lipid/lipoprotein space, recent PCSK9 CVD outcomes trial data, some published, some not, will be discussed, followed by the dilemma of when and what patients to treat who are hypertriglyceridemic,” he said. “In my opinion, this remains one of the most unanswered questions in lipid medicine.”
HF, hypertension, diabetes and beyond
Eckel said this year’s meeting will have a greater emphasis on HF than previous meetings.
“We’re in a challenging space about [type 2 diabetes] therapy these days,” he said. “Should metformin still be the No. 1 drug? What about the CV outcomes trial data and choice of second or even first drugs of choice; how do I choose between a GLP-1 receptor agonist or SGLT2 inhibitor? The cases are always difficult and fun to discuss with take-home messages for attendees.”

According to a CMHC press release, the meeting will present attendees with the opportunity to learn firsthand about the newest and most effective ways to enhance practice and patient outcomes.
“The CMHC West meeting is a great opportunity to catch on all the latest data on how to treat our challenging cardiometabolic patients,” meeting chair Christie M. Ballantyne, MD, professor of medicine, chief of the sections of cardiology and cardiovascular research and director of the Center for Cardiometabolic Disease Prevention at Baylor College of Medicine, told Cardiology Today. “In one meeting, you can get the latest on obesity, lipids, diabetes, hypertension, inflammation and prevention of heart failure from leading experts. The sessions are interactive and because of the format, you can ask questions on specific patients and meet the various experts during the day.”
