What to expect at SCAI 2018
Interventional cardiology is expanding its horizons, and this year’s Society for Cardiovascular Angiography and Interventions’ Scientific Sessions will work to prepare practitioners for the progressive field. SCAI 2018 will attract nearly 2,000 interventional cardiologists and CV professionals from across the globe for the 4-day program.
The 41st annual meeting, held in San Diego, California, will examine the state of interventional cardiology and where the field is headed in the future. The meeting will assess the latest in interventional technology, quality-based practices and will include live cases, renowned speakers, late-breaking clinical science, case reviews, abstract presentations, interactive workshops and more.
“There are a lot of didactic sessions as well as case-based formats to help practicing clinicians take the latest information and apply it to their practice,” SCAI 2018 Scientific Sessions co-chair Sunil V. Rao, MD, FSCAI, professor of medicine at Duke University School of Medicine and Duke Clinical Research Institute and Cardiology Today’s Intervention Editorial Board member, said in a press release. “The SCAI meeting is a great place to review the entire body of contemporary knowledge as it relates to interventional cardiology, and see how it is being applied in practice through demonstration of live cases and case-based presentations.”
Attendees will be introduced to more than 300 abstracts and eight late-breaking clinical science presentations, 12 live cases and discussions on the science transforming the field.
Four lectures will be delivered throughout the meeting, including a special keynote address from Robert Canessa, MD. Canessa is one of the 16 survivors of the Uruguayan Air Force Flight that crashed into the Andes Mountain on October 13, 1972. Canessa went on to become a pediatric cardiologist at Hospital Italiano in Uruguay where he also serves as the director of the department of cardiac ultrasound and the department of prenatal diagnosis of congenital heart diseases. His inspiring story of battling adversity is shared in his recent book, I Had to Survive: How a Plane Crash in the Andes Inspired my Calling to Save Lives. Attendees will have the opportunity to meet Canessa during a poolside book signing.
Other speakers include: Anthony N. DeMaria, MD, professor of medicine and chief of cardiology at the University of California San Diego School of Medicine; Cardiology Today’s Intervention Associate Medical Editor Roxana Mehran, MD, MSCAI, professor of medicine and director of interventional cardiovascular research and clinical trials at the Zena and Michael A. Weiner Cardiovascular Institute at Mount Sinai School of Medicine; and Jacqueline Kreutzer, MD, FSCAI, chief of the division of pediatric cardiology at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC.
“Attendees will have ample opportunities to get more involved with the day-to-day activities of SCAI and make an impact on improving patient care and advancing their practice to the next level,” SCAI 2018 Scientific Sessions co-chair Emmanouil S. Brilakis, MD, PhD, FSCAI, director of the Center for Advanced Coronary Interventions at the Minneapolis Heart Institute, adjunct professor of medicine at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School and Cardiology Today’s Intervention Editorial Board member, said in the release.
In addition to the five tracks offered at this year’s event, SCAI 2018 will feature four new sessions: The Innovations in Cardiovascular Interventions and Technology Summit; Complex and High-Risk Interventional Procedures (CHIP); Structural Heart Interventions: Advanced Techniques; and the Complex Peripheral Vascular Interventions Summit. Each session is focused on the advanced techniques, tips and tools required for optimal performance.
