DASH ranked best overall diet, best heart-healthy diet

The NIH announced that the DASH diet, developed by researchers funded by the NHLBI, was ranked best overall diet for the seventh year in a row by U.S. News and World Report.

The diet also ranked as the best for diabetes and healthy eating and tied for best for heart disease prevention, according to a press release from the institute.

DASH, which stands for Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension, emphasizes fruits, vegetables and low-fat dairy foods while limiting high-fat red meat, sweets and sugar-sweetened beverages.

The diet was developed to prevent and treat hypertension but has also been effective in lowering blood cholesterol, according to the release.

The DASH diet was one of 38 evaluated in the report, whose scoring criteria included ease of following, nutrition content, safety, efficacy for weight loss and protection against diabetes and heart disease, according to the release.
