VIDEO: Expert discusses results of three important interventional cardiology trials

NEW ORLEANS — In this Cardiology Today video exclusive, C. Michael Valentine, MD, discusses the results of the FUTURE, PIONEER AF-PCI and GARY late-breaking clinical trials presented at the American Heart Association Scientific Sessions.

Valentine called the results of FUTURE “surprising” because they suggested that all-cause death was two times higher in patients who underwent fractional flow reserve instead of anatomical guidance. As of now, he said, no major conclusions can be drawn and further investigation is needed.

He said the results of the PIONEER AF-PCI trial of patients on anticoagulation for nonvalvular atrial fibrillation who require PCI with stenting should “lead cardiologists across the country to reassess how they manage these difficult patients to look at lower-risk regimens that can lower the risk of bleeding to our patients.”

According to Valentine, the GARY study brings to light biases inherent in medical registries regarding patients being chosen for different types of valve replacements; in this case, patients chosen for transcatheter aortic valve replacement were sicker than those chosen for surgical AVR.
