ORLANDO, Fla. – The Heart Failure Society of America has met the goals of its strategic plan and is poised to make more progress, according to the society’s president.

JoAnn Lindenfeld, MD, FHFSA , medical director of the department of medicine and professor of medicine, Vanderbilt University Medical Center, Nashville, Tennessee, and president of HFSA, said most of the strategic plan’s goals were met early, so a new strategic plan is being formulated.

“The previous plan was set to go to 2020,” Lindenfeld said. “We’ve already met most of those goals, so in January and February we will meet and try to develop a new [strategic] plan. We were really vigorous early on in fulfilling [the previous plan]. We developed that very well.”

The previous plan, published in the Journal of Cardiac Failure in 2012, outlined goals and objectives for advocacy, membership, education and communications.

The goals included eliminating barriers for qualified professionals to treat patients with HF, increasing resources for research in the field of HF prevention and treatment, increasing HFSA membership from other disciplines such as palliative care, increasing web-based programs for patients and providers, and facilitating multidisciplinary interactions between all involved in the care of patients with HF.

In her speech, Lindenfeld said the society requires a commitment to “multidisciplinary activities” in order to build strength as a national organization.

“A key part of this is a really vigorous early career development program. We’re excited about that, and I think we’ve followed through with that,” she said.

“We have over 100 new fellows,” she said. “We are growing rapidly. Our ongoing advocacy efforts and commitment to providing more research grants have produced good results. As of March 31, we’re seven short of our highest membership total ever. When we wrap up this [annual] meeting, we also should have our highest-ever attendance.” – by James Clark
