VIDEO: Expert discusses uncommon dyslipidemias with common presentations
NEW ORLEANS — In this video from the National Lipid Association Scientific Sessions, James Underberg, MD, MS, FACP, FNLA, discusses his presentation on uncommon dyslipidemias with common presentations.
The talk covered various uncommon disorders that have similar presentations to multiple common disorders commonly seen in lipidology, cardiology, internal medicine, and endocrinology.
“It's important to know about those uncommon disorders because if you don't know what they are, you won't know when to look for them and then you may miss them even though they are not that frequent in their occurrence,” said Underberg, co-chair of the sessions.
The discussion covered four conditions; lysosomal acid lipase deficiency, familial chylomicronemia syndrome, familial combined hypercholesterolemia and lipodystrophy, which often present themselves in patients who have fatty liver, high triglycerides, insulin resistance and low HDL.
Patients who have these characteristics but do not show common abnormalities should be considered more carefully by physicians, Underberg, clinical assistant professor of medicine at the NYU School of Medicine and the NYU Center for Prevention of Cardiovascular Disease; director of Bellevue Hospital Lipid Clinic, New York; and diplomate of the American Board of Clinical Lipidology, said.
Underberg also discussed new therapies in patients with lipodystrophy and lysosomal acid lipase deficiency; he said identifying and understanding these new treatments will help direct physicians to new therapeutic interventions.
