NEW ORLEANS —In this video, Alan Brown, MD, FACC, discusses the opportunities on the horizon for the National Lipid Association, as well as benefits of becoming a member, at the the 2016 Scientific Sessions.

“We’re enjoying introducing new members to the NLA and showing them the value of not only being members, but coming to meetings like this,” said Brown, a member of the NLA’s executive committee. “The science has been unbelievable with much discussion about genetics, about [lipoprotein (a)], about clinical approaches to patients with dyslipidemia, but you can ... delve into the science as deeply as you like at these meetings.”

According to Brown, a recent major accomplishment of the NLA is the joint statement between the organization and the American College of Cardiology on non-statin lipid-lowering therapies. Although the ACC guidelines previously focused primarily on statin use, percent reduction and LDL, the new statement focuses on the four patient groups that receive statin treatment to help clinicians ensure that they’re receiving the proper intensity of statin, and to clarify the roles for non-statin therapies, he said.

“I encourage you all, no matter what your specialty, if you're interested in prevention to consider joining the NLA,” Brown, chief of cardiology at Advocate Lutheran General Hospital, Park Ridge, Illinois, concluded.
