CHICAGO — In this video exclusive, Sripal Bangalore, MD, provides a recap of his Douglas P. Zipes Distinguished Young Scientist Lecture on the past, present and future of PCI technology.

There have been “significant strides in PCI technology” since the first balloon angioplasty procedure was performed in 1977, said Bangalore, interventional cardiologist and associate professor of medicine at NYU Langone Medical Center.

Recent data have raised a “critically important” question of what can move the PCI field forward for treatment of CAD while reducing stent-related events, he said.

One area of interest is biodegradable technology, of which bioabsorbable vascular scaffolds seem to hold the most promise, according to Bangalore.
