VIDEO: New research calls attention to type 2 MI

CHICAGO — In this video, Hanna Gaggin, MD, MPH, FACC, details new research on the frequency and prognosis of type 2 MI among patients in the CASABLANCA study who underwent coronary or peripheral angiography.
Gaggin and colleagues presented data at the American College of Cardiology Scientific Session on 1,251 patients who underwent angiography and were followed for a median of 3.4 years.
“What was really surprising was how frequent type 2 MI was,” said Gaggin, cardiologist and scientist at Massachusetts General Hospital and assistant professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School. She said it was observed in about 12% of the cohort. In other results, patients with type 2 MI had an increased rate of MACE compared with patients without type 2 MI, but a similar rate as patients with type 1 MI.
“We know based on our research that once you have type 2 MI, you’re more likely to have ... MACE in the future,” she said.
Gaggin and colleagues called for increased attention to type 2 MI.
