CHICAGO — Karol Watson, MD, PhD, director of the UCLA Barbra Streisand Women’s Heart Health Program, discusses the role of statin therapy in the acute setting following an ACS.

After highlighting the clear CVD prevention benefits being reaped from the cholesterol-lowering medications, she emphasizes the utility of the agents goes beyond the chronic outpatient setting.

“In patients with ACS, statins are among the most effective plaque stabilization strategies we know of,” Watson said.

She delves into compelling results with intensive stain therapy observed through optical coherence thermography, then points to data on CV risk reduction seen with MIRACL and IMPROVE-IT trials.

“Statin therapy is not only essential in the outpatient setting for long-term risk reduction, but vital in the ACS setting patient as well,” Watson said.
