VIDEO: SAPPHIRE Worldwide demonstrates safety, efficacy of carotid stenting
LAS VEGAS — In this video, D. Christopher Metzger, MD, FACC, FSCAI, highlights results from the SAPPHIRE Worldwide trial of carotid artery stenting, which he presented at VIVA 2015.
The prospective study included more than 21,000 patients treated with a nitinol carotid stent (Precise, Cordis).
Metzger said that carotid stenting "did very well," and was associated with low rates of stroke death and MI, confirming the safety and effectiveness of the procedure in a real-world setting. He also noted that the large cohort allowed for subgroup analyses, with results indicating that patients who had the best outcomes from the treatment were those included due to anatomic risk, such as patients with endarterectomy restenosis or a contralateral occlusion.
Events were more common among symptomatic patients and those aged older than 75 years. Metzger said that there was no significant difference in outcomes according to sex, or whether the procedure was performed at an academic or nonacademic facility.
