ACC to launch clinical registries to track ablation, LAA occlusion procedures for AF

The American College of Cardiology announced the upcoming launch of two clinical registry programs, the LAAO registry and the AFib Ablation registry, for patients with atrial fibrillation.
The registries are intended to track outcomes from treatment and stroke prevention in this population, according to a press release.

“With a growing prevalence of [AF] and growing options for treatment and stroke prevention in [AF] patients, the ACC saw a need for real-world data to track and evaluate the use of these new technologies,” Cardiology Today Editorial Board member Kim Allan Williams, MD, FACC, president of the ACC, said in the release. “Data derived from these registries are expected to inform practices and improve patient outcomes.”
The LAAO registry will include real-world data on procedural indications, outcomes and safety from left atrial appendage occlusion procedures. The AFib Ablation registry will include demographic information as well as data on the prevalence, acute management and patient outcomes among patients who undergo AF ablation.
According to the release, the data will be used to develop guidelines and quality metrics for AF therapies.
Once launched, the two new programs will be part of the National Cardiovascular Data Registry, which currently includes eight other registry programs for data related to CV conditions, according to the release.
