The American College of Cardiology and American Heart Association, in collaboration with nine other medical societies, are developing an updated guideline for the management of hypertension, according to a press release.

The new recommendations are expected in 2016. The new guideline will serve as an update to the 2003 guideline, officially the Seventh Report of the Joint National Committee on Prevention, Evaluation and Treatment of High Blood Pressure (JNC 7) developed by the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute. The AHA and ACC assumed responsibility in 2013 for the creation of several CV prevention guidelines previously formerly by the NHLBI. For this update, a separate evidence review committee will develop a systematic review addressing specific questions to inform recommendations in the 2016 guideline on the management of hypertension.

Other participating societies include the American Academy of Physician Assistants, American College of Preventive Medicine, American Geriatrics Society, American Pharmacists Association, American Society of Hypertension, American Society of Preventive Cardiology, Association of Black Cardiologists, National Medical Association and Preventive Cardiovascular Nurses Association.
