Valentin Fuster, MD, PhD, director of the Mount Sinai Medical Center, was recently awarded the 2013 Society of Cardiovascular Computed Tomography Arthur S. Agatston Cardiovascular Disease Prevention Award in recognition of his lifelong contributions to achieve heart disease prevention, particularly his work in unraveling the molecular and cellular bases for atherosclerosis development, according to a press release. The award recognizes individuals whose pioneering efforts have saved lives from CAD.
“I feel very proud to receive this award that wears the name of Dr. Arthur S. Agatston,” Fuster stated. “Dr. Agatston was one of the first who had the vision to link a diagnostic tool (coronary calcification), with its use, to encourage prevention (Agatston Score). He is a visionary.”
Fuster recently received two other honors: the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association Ron Haddock International Impact Award for his service and accomplishments to the organization’s global efforts in heart disease prevention and the 2013 Camino Real Award by the Research Institute of North American Studies “Benjamin Franklin” of the University of Alcalá (Instituto Franklin–UAH) in Spain, which recognizes him as a prestigious Spaniard whose lifelong professional work has contributed to the positive image and promotion of Spain in North America.
