Patients with peripheral arterial disease who were treated with the S.M.A.R.T. Nitinol Self-Expanding Stent reported improvements in quality of life out to 3 years, according to new data from the STROLL trial presented at the 26th Annual International Symposium on Endovascular Therapy.
The STROLL trial included 250 patients with PAD who received a S.M.A.R.T. stent (Cordis Corp.) to treat blockages in the superficial femoral artery. All patients had de novo or restenotic native superficial femoral artery lesions or total occlusions of ≥4 cm to ≤15 cm and reference vessel diameters of ≥4 mm to ≤6 mm.
According to 3-year results presented, arteries remained open in 72.9% of the 209 patients still alive and not lost to follow-up, according to a press release.
The researchers found that 3.6% of stents had fractured, but all fractures were not severe, did not cause problems for the patients and kept the arteries open. Mean ankle-brachial index improved after stenting and did not change during the course of 3 years, according to the release.
Patients also experienced improvements in walking distance, walking speed, symptoms and other quality-of-life measures.
At 3 years, the researchers also reported significant improvement on the Peripheral Artery Questionnaire summary scale and the Walking Impairment Questionnaire for distance and speed.
“It’s impressive that the stent continued to perform so well even 3 years after treatment,” Michael R. Jaff, DO, of Harvard Medical School, Boston, and a member of the Cardiology Today Editorial Board, stated in the press release. “Patients still felt much better and walked farther and faster than they did before treatment.”
