Massachusetts General Hospital launches Institute for Heart, Vascular and Stroke Care
In February, Massachusetts General Hospital announced the launch of the new Institute for Heart, Vascular and Stroke Care, one of the only institutes in the world to integrate CV and cerebrovascular care.
“Our goal is to provide state-of-the-art, value-based care to patients with heart, vascular and cerebrovascular diseases and to integrate cutting-edge research opportunities within those areas,” Michael R. Jaff, DO, chair of the new institute and medical director of the Mass General Vascular Center, told Cardiology Today. Jaff is also a member of the Vascular Medicine section of the Cardiology Today Editorial Board.
The institute is built on four pillars that include an integrated, personalized clinical care model, broad educational initiatives, quality and public policy advocacy leadership, and robust funding programs in clinical and translational research. The institute is also pioneering a new patient- and disease-focused care model, by matching each patient with a specialist working within a multidisciplinary team, across disciplines. In addition, physician-scientist leadership will serve as a resource and voice for public policy debates to lead national and international dialogue on issues facing CV and cerebrovascular patients, according to a press release.

The institute has also established SPARK grants to further deliver innovation and yield critical medical breakthroughs with direct funding of clinical and translational research projects. “We are funding early- to mid-stage investigators in novel research that will advance the care of patients with heart, vascular and cerebrovascular disease,” Jaff said.
