World Heart Day was created by the World Heart Federation in 2000 to inform people worldwide that CVD and stroke are the leading causes of death, claiming 17.3 million lives annually. Each year, on Sept. 29, the World Heart Federation and organizations all over the world come together with the aim to drive action and education that by controlling risk factors at least 80% of premature deaths from CVD and stroke could be avoided.

World Heart Day unites people from more than 100 countries in the fight against CVD, with heart-healthy activities and events including health checks, organized walks, runs and fitness sessions, public talks, stage shows, scientific forums, exhibitions, concerts, carnivals and sports tournaments.

The focus of this year’s World Heart Day is CVD prevention among women and children. The goal is to educate people that the threat of CVD can begin even before birth and that risk increases during childhood with exposure to risk factors such as an unhealthy diet and tobacco smoke exposure.
