Trial assessed effects of endovascular cooling and conventional stroke therapy on patients with ischemic stroke.

Design: randomized
Patients: 58
Centers: multicenter
Country: United States

RESULTS: Among the patients, 17.9% of those treated with therapeutic hypothermia had a modified Rankin score of 0 to 1 vs. 24.1% of patients not assigned to therapeutic hypothermia at 90 days. A modified Rankin score >1 was reported in 22 control patients (75.9%) and 23 patients (82.14%) undergoing hypothermia therapy. Pneumonia was reported in 14 patients assigned to induced hypothermia vs. three not assigned to hypothermia but did not have an effect on disability outcomes at three months.

Presented at ISC 2010.
