C. Noel Bairey Merz, MD, an internationally renowned expert in women’s heart health, was honored at the American Heart Association Scientific Sessions 2009 with the Women in Cardiology Mentoring Award.

Bairey Merz, director of the Women’s Heart Center at Cedars-Sinai Heart Institute, is also the Women’s Guild Endowed Chair in Women’s and a professor of medicine at Cedars-Sinai. The award, initiated by the Women in Cardiology Committee and sponsored by the AHA Council on Clinical Cardiology, recognizes individuals with an outstanding record of effective mentoring of women cardiologists.

“Dr. Bairey Merz is known and respected throughout the medical world for her excellent patient care, her groundbreaking research and for mentoring the future leaders of cardiology,” Eduardo Marban, MD, PhD, director of the Cedars-Sinai Heart Institute, said in a press release. “She is an inspiration to all of us and the ideal recipient of this well-deserved award.”

Bairey Merz has served as chair of the NHLBI-sponsored Women’s Ischemic Syndrome Evaluation (WISE) study since 1997. The ongoing study evaluates the diagnoses and treatments of women’s heart disease and has been responsible for uncovering and highlighting different treatments and diagnoses between men and women.
