SAN ANTONIO — Day two of the 2023 American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology Annual Meeting was very busy for new AAAAI president Jonathan A. Bernstein, MD, FAAAAI.

“We had an excellent plenary session,” Bernstein, who also is an adjunct professor of medicine at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine, said in this Healio exclusive video.

The session, “Paradigm Shifts in Drug Allergy,” featured David A. Kahn, MD, FAAAAI, Joshua A. Boyce, MD, FAAAAI, and Elizabeth J. Phillips, MD, FAAAAI, discussing aspirin-exacerbated respiratory disease, severe cutaneous adverse reactions and updates to drug allergy parameters.

“This was a nice summary of the updated editions to management of drug allergy, which I found very useful,” Bernstein said. “As Dr. Kahn said, you have to read it, you have to learn it and you also have to do it.”

Bernstein also noted his own presentation on clinically and occupationally relevant manifestations of cannabis allergy.

“Up to 39 states have legalized it, and there are now growth facilities,” he said. “People are exposed and can develop skin as well as respiratory disease.”

During another session, Bernstein discussed non-allergic rhinitis, which he said he has been interested in during his entire career.

“It doesn’t get a lot of action, but we really have learned that this is a neurogenic disorder,” he said. “This is very debilitating. If we treat it like allergic rhinitis, we will have a lot of sick patients.”

Bernstein warned clinicians that they should make sure that they can differentiate between allergic, non-allergic and mixed rhinitis subtypes effectively.

In between these sessions, Bernstein attended the poster presentations too, which he called very interesting.

“I was able to meet with a couple of my medical residents and medical students who are authors on works I was helping to mentor,” he said. “It was very nice. We have great participation.”
