SAN ANTONIO — Allergy and immunology physicians can use telemedicine beyond routine follow-up visits, Healio Allergy/Asthma Peer Perspective Board Member Allison C. Ramsey, MD, said in this Healio exclusive video.

Ramsey, who is an allergist and clinical immunologist at Rochester Regional Health as well as a clinical assistant professor at University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry, addressed telemedicine in addition to electronic health records during her presentation at the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology Annual Meeting.

“I reviewed using telemedicine to de-label penicillin allergy and also to employ it for other drug allergy de-labeling,” Ramsey said, adding that it also could be used for spirometry, assessing patient inhaler technique and patient education.

Ramsey also discussed how point-of-care documents can help practitioners decide whether patients are appropriate candidates for penicillin de-labeling challenges via skin testing or whether patients should just continue to avoid the drug.

Plus, Ramsey talked about electronic health records, which she called inadequate repositories of information, during her presentation.

“There’s a recent working group report that came out regarding how we can improve electronic health records for allergy documentation,” Ramsey said.
