The European Academy of Allergy and Clinical Immunology and Asthma-Allergy Denmark have launched a campaign emphasizing that Europeans feel “trapped” by allergy.

To coincide with the EAACI annual congress in Copenhagen on June 7-11, a visual perspective of a person “trapped” in a large box with the word allergy written on it was planned in Christiansborg Slotsplads public square, according to a press release. Distribution of information on the risk factors and importance of early diagnoses of allergy, which is estimated to affect 150 million people in Europe, was to take place through today.

“An allergic person can fear insignificant things with which we come into contact on a daily basis, such as plants, pets, insects, food or drugs, and this leads them to feel ‘trapped’ in their condition,” Nikolaos G. Papadopoulos, MD, PhD, EAACI president, said in the release.

“This campaign is important and must show how allergies can feel in a life where symptoms from allergies affect both working life [and] leisure,” Anne Holm Hansen, vice president, Asthma-Allergy Denmark, said in the release. “A diagnosis and appropriate treatment and prevention is essential for the good life.”
