Three receive OWL awards

CHICAGO — Ophthalmic World Leaders, previously Ophthalmic Women Leaders, presented three OWL awards at its “signature event” during the American Academy of Ophthalmology meeting here.

OWL, an organization dedicated to advancing diversity in leadership, gives the Rising Star Award, the Catalyst Award and the Visionary Award each year to a member of the organization.

This year the Rising Star award, given to an emerging leader in ophthalmology, was given to Marjan Farid, MD, director of cornea, cataract and refractive surgery and vice chair of ophthalmic faculty at the Gavin Herbert Eye Institute, UC-Irvine, California.

The Catalyst Award, given to an ophthalmic leader who assists the careers of others and advances diversity in the field, was given to William B. Trattler, MD, of the Center for Excellence in Eye Care, Miami, Florida.

“I think we all work together to make this profession better,” Trattler said. “As physicians we are making such a big difference for our patients. ...I feel very honored and humbled to receive this award.”

Marsha Link, PhD, owner and President of Link Consulting, was given the Catalyst Award, for her work that inspires and challenges others.

“Visionary leaders are those that do what they say they will do,” Link said in accepting her award. “They are implementers, they are doers. They aren’t seat warmers and talk is cheap.”

The event also included a keynote speech from Elizabeth Yeu, MD., who discussed advancing in leadership. – by Rebecca L. Forand
