The White House announced today that September has been declared National Childhood Cancer Awareness Month.

President Barack Obama made the proclamation to highlight the recent successes in treating pediatric cancer and to underscore the challenges still facing young people dealing with life-threatening diseases.

He also aimed to showcase provisions in the Affordable Care Act passed last year.

The act forbids denial of insurance coverage due to preexisting conditions. It also prohibits companies from rejecting insurance for children participating in clinical studies and from imposing lifetime dollar limits on health benefits.

“Too many children and their families have faced the harmful effects of cancer,” the president said in a press release. “In memory of the young lives taken from us far too soon, and in honor of the families who stood beside them, we continue to support researchers, doctors, and advocates working to improve treatments, find cures, and reach a tomorrow where all our children can lead full and healthy lives.”
