Activity Description
Antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibody–associated vasculitides (AAV) are rare, multisystem, autoimmune diseases causing inflammation and damage to small blood vessels and their surrounding tissues. This group of vasculitides is associated with a high healthcare burden, impact on patient quality of life, increased risk of hospitalization, and mortality. Commonly affected organs include the kidneys, lungs, skin, heart, ear, nose, and throat, as well as the nervous and gastrointestinal systems. Recent advances in therapy offer promising new options to improve patient outcomes while avoiding corticosteroid toxicity. In this program, faculty will review AAV pathophysiology, approaches for early detection and intervention, as well as evidence to support steroid-sparing treatment regimens. This educational activity features Curbside Consults, a dynamic and interactive case-based segment that will highlight strategies to improve the care and lives of patients with AAV.
Target Audience
The intended audience for this activity is rheumatologists, nurse practitioners, physician associates, and other healthcare professionals involved in the management of patients with antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibody (ANCA)–associated vasculitis (AAV).
Learning Objectives
Upon successful completion of this activity, participants should be better able to:
- Evaluate the significance of the complement alternative pathway in the pathogenesis and treatment of ANCA-associated AAV.
- List evidence-based tools to facilitate the early detection of AAV.
- Outline the importance of glucocorticoid toxicity in AAV management.
- Summarize the clinical evidence for standard-of-care treatments and steroid-sparing therapies in AAV management.
- Examine interprofessional strategies to improve the care and outcomes of patients with AAV.
