Activity Description
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a highly prevalent disease that is often underdiagnosed and undertreated, negatively impacting patients’ quality of life. The Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease (GOLD) guidelines are revised annually and represent an important repository of evidenced-based diagnosis and treatment recommendations, but they remain underutilized in clinical practice. Additionally, as the therapeutic landscape for COPD continues to expand, many clinicians are challenged to stay up to date on emerging, investigational therapies in late-stage development. In this In Case You Missed program, experts summarize the current COPD guidelines, differentiate mechanisms of action for emerging treatments, and review the latest clinical evidence for novel targeted therapies in late-stage development. Faculty discuss key data presented at conferences during the past year on therapies with the potential to improve outcomes for patients with COPD.
Target Audience
The intended audience for this activity is pulmonologists, pharmacists, and other healthcare professionals involved in the management of patients with COPD.
Learning Objectives
Upon successful completion of this activity, participants should be better able to:
- Review the burden associated with COPD as well as current guidelines and treatment goals.
- Differentiate mechanisms of action for emerging treatments that have potential in improving outcomes for patients with COPD.
- Describe new clinical trial data on the safety and efficacy of novel targeted therapies in late-stage development that address the underlying pathways that cause COPD.
