Activity Description
HIV is an infection that can progress to AIDS if left untreated, posing a severe threat to an individual’s immune system. Although pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) drugs are highly effective in preventing HIV transmission, less than 25% of eligible patients receive PrEP due to clinician knowledge gaps and confidence issues. Updated guidelines recommend offering PrEP to sexually active individuals at risk of HIV infection, including those with partners with an unknown HIV status or a history of sexually transmitted infections. Various PrEP options exist, including once-daily oral regimens and the recently approved long-acting injectable drug cabotegravir. Despite available options, there are disparities in PrEP uptake, particularly among specific populations, emphasizing the need for increased education and training of clinicians about barriers to use and patient discussions about PrEP. In this CE activity, expert faculty explain the efficacy, safety, availability, and appropriate use of HIV PrEP and identify disparities in the use of HIV PrEP based on race, geographical location, and other key social determinants of health.
Target Audience
The intended audience for this activity is family medicine practitioners, internists, pharmacists, nurse practitioners, physician associates, and other healthcare professionals involved in the management of patients at risk for HIV.
Learning Objectives
Upon successful completion of this activity, participants should be better able to:
- Explain the efficacy, safety, availability, and appropriate use of HIV PrEP.
- Identify disparities in the use of HIV PrEP on the basis of race, geographical location, and other key social determinants of health.
