HIV PrEP: Deploying Strategies for Equitable Preventive Care

Overview

Provider Statement

This continuing education activity is jointly provided by

  and HIV

Support Statement

This program has been supported by an independent educational grant from Gilead Sciences, Inc.

Activity Description

HIV remains a significant public health challenge, particularly in high-risk populations. Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) has proven to be highly effective in preventing HIV transmission, yet it remains underutilized, with less than 25% of eligible individuals receiving this preventive therapy. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) released updated guidelines in 2021, recommending that all sexually active adults and adolescents be informed about PrEP. Despite these guidelines, barriers such as lack of knowledge among clinicians, patient discomfort in discussing sexual history, and logistical concerns like cost and insurance coverage, hinder the broader adoption of PrEP. Specific populations, including young men who have sex with men (MSM) from racial or ethnic minority groups and those in the Southern United States, are particularly affected by low PrEP uptake. In this CE activity, expert faculty discuss the latest guideline recommendations on assessing patient HIV risk and eligibility for PrEP. They also evaluate best practices for initiating conversations with patients regarding the efficacy, safety, and appropriate use of PrEP as well as discussing the disparities and barriers that hinder its uptake.

Target Audience

The intended audience for this activity is primary care providers, infectious disease specialists, pharmacists, nurse practitioners, physician associates, and other healthcare professionals involved in the management of sexually active adults and adolescents.

Learning Objectives

Upon successful completion of this activity, participants should be better able to:

  • Employ the latest guideline recommendations to assess patient risk for HIV acquisition and eligibility for PrEP.
  • Initiate discussions with patients regarding the availability, efficacy, safety, and appropriate use of HIV PrEP.
  • Outline disparities in HIV PrEP use related to age, race, gender, and other key social determinants of health.
