Virtual Practice in Obesity Management Through Simulated Scenarios

Overview

Provider Statement

This continuing education activity is provided by Vindico Medical Education

Support Statement

This activity is supported by an educational grant from Lilly.

Activity Description

Obesity is an increasingly prevalent chronic condition associated with substantial risks of morbidity and mortality. It is also a risk factor for some of the leading causes of preventable death, including cardiovascular disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes mellitus, sleep apnea, gallbladder disease, osteoarthritis, and certain types of cancer. With prevalence continuing to escalate, it is predicted that 1 of 2 persons in the United States will have obesity by 2030. Among the groups most at risk for severe obesity are women, Black non-Hispanic adults, and adults with low income. Currently, underdiagnosis and undertreatment of obesity are frequent due to shortcomings in patient evaluation, uncertainty regarding approaches that support adherence to behavioral and lifestyle modifications, and a lack of thorough knowledge concerning the efficacy and safety of pharmacological and surgical interventions. In this virtual patient management simulator, an authentic in-office setting with patient interactions will be presented. This simulation will allow an authentic practice environment in which to implement guidelines and treatment strategies across an array of increasingly challenging clinical presentations. Virtual Practice in Obesity Management Through Simulated Scenarios will demonstrate approaches to managing patients with obesity based on patient needs, comorbidities, recent clinical evidence, and the use of shared decision-making.

Target Audience

The intended audience for this activity is family medicine physicians, internists, and other healthcare professionals involved in the management of patients with overweight and obesity.

Learning Objectives

Upon successful completion of this activity, participants should be better able to:

  • Recognize obesity as a chronic but treatable disease and incorporate strategies for the timely diagnosis of the condition.
  • Apply approaches to manage obesity based on therapeutic interventions, patient needs, complications/comorbidities, and recent clinical evidence, including long-term management strategies.
  • Demonstrate the use of shared decision-making to initiate weight loss conversations and facilitate discussions on evidence-based anti-obesity medications.
