Support Statement

This activity is supported by an educational grant from Seqirus USA Inc.

Activity Description

Influenza has a significant impact on children and contributes extensively to the spread of virus in the community due to high infection rates among the pediatric population. Coinfections with other respiratory viruses, like SARS-CoV-2, often increase the severity of pediatric cases. Data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention from 2010 to 2023 highlight the burden of influenza, with millions affected annually, underscoring the critical need to boost vaccination rates among children. Different technologies for influenza vaccine production—such as egg-based and cell culture-based methods—offer various benefits, with cell-based vaccines showing greater similarity to circulating viruses and potentially higher efficacy due to reduced antigenic mismatch. Looking ahead to the 2024-2025 flu season, trivalent vaccines are expected to cover the most common strains, ensuring broad protection. In this CE activity, expert faculty summarize the burden of influenza on the pediatric population and the critical role of increasing vaccination coverage. They also review best practices for administering influenza vaccines based on the latest efficacy data as well as interprofessional strategies to address vaccine hesitancy.

Target Audience

The intended audience for this activity is pediatricians, nurses, nurse practitioners, and other healthcare professionals involved in the management of pediatric patients at risk for influenza.

Learning Objectives

Upon successful completion of this activity, participants should be better able to:

  • Summarize the burden of influenza on the pediatric population and the critical role of increasing vaccination coverage.
  • Administer influenza vaccines in pediatric patients based on the latest efficacy data.
  • Implement interprofessional strategies to address pediatric influenza vaccine hesitancy.
