This activity is supported by an educational grant from Alcon Vision, LLC.

Activity Description

Dry eye disease (DED) is a chronic condition that affects the tear film and ocular surface, causing persistent discomfort and visual disturbances—which can affect a patient’s daily activities and overall quality of life. Treatment options for DED symptoms include eye drops, gels, implants, lenses, and/or mechanical procedures that aim to promote and/or retain moisture on the ocular surface. Neurostimulation provides a relatively novel mechanism for promoting tear production through activation of the underlying nerve pathways via mechanical, chemical, or electrical stimuli. At present, 2 neurostimulation agents are approved for treatment in patients with DED, including an extranasal stimulation device and a nasal spray (varenicline), and clinical investigation is underway for additional mechanical and electrical devices and novel pharmacologic agents, including AR-15512 and simpinicline. As neurostimulation therapies continue to emerge and play an increasing role in DED management, it is crucial for clinicians to stay updated on the latest data to ensure timely, evidence-based treatment decisions. This Rapid Response activity includes coverage of the latest data on neurostimulation agents for DED management from a recent ophthalmology conference that took place in Chicago, October 2024.

Target Audience

The intended audience for this activity is ophthalmologists and optometrists involved in the management of patients with DED.

Learning Objectives

Upon successful completion of this activity, participants should be better able to:

  • Explain the rationale for targeting neuronal pathways for treatment of patients with DED.
  • Evaluate the latest clinical data on neurostimulation therapies for DED and their potential roles in treatment.
