Activity Description
Thyroid eye disease (TED) is a complex autoimmune-mediated inflammatory disorder of the orbit that is associated with a spectrum of signs and symptoms and varying levels of severity. Early diagnosis and initiation of appropriate treatment are imperative for preventing progression to severe disease and potential vision loss; however, diagnosis can be challenging. Traditional treatments for TED, such as steroids, radiotherapy, and surgery, all relieve symptoms but do not alter the course of disease. Newly approved and emerging monoclonal antibodies targeting the insulin-like growth factor-1 receptor have demonstrated efficacy in the management of TED, including for patients with low clinical activity scores, resulting in a paradigm shift in disease management. In this CE monograph, experts in the field evaluate treatment strategies that exhibit a favorable risk-benefit profile to improve outcomes and patient satisfaction and review risk factors and classification criteria that aid in the timely differential diagnosis of TED. Challenging real-world cases that allow for application of the content into clinical practice are presented.
Target Audience
The intended audience for this activity is comprehensive ophthalmologists and other healthcare professionals involved in the management of patients with TED.
Learning Objectives
Upon successful completion of this activity, participants should be better able to:
- Recognize TED as a chronic autoimmune disease that may flare, regardless of treatment.
- Differentially diagnose TED to facilitate early treatment.
- Incorporate treatment strategies for TED that exhibit a favorable benefit-risk profile to improve outcomes and patient satisfaction.
