Activity Description

Multimodal imaging is key for the early detection and monitoring of geographic atrophy (GA) secondary to age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Optical coherence tomography has recently been recommended by an international consensus to be the primary imaging method for the detection of atrophy in eyes. Once diagnosed, timely therapeutic intervention should be initiated with recently FDA-approved therapies that target components of the complement cascade. When optimally integrated into personalized management protocols, these therapies have the potential to slow the growth rate of GA lesions and delay subsequent vision loss. In this CE monograph, experts in the field will review the most recent findings on the pathophysiology of GA secondary to AMD, assess the latest imaging tools for the detection and monitoring of disease progression, and evaluate the latest clinical evidence on approved therapies while providing practical approaches for optimal patient selection. Challenging real-world cases will also be presented, allowing for application of the content into clinical practice.

Target Audience

The intended audience for this activity is retina specialists, ophthalmologists, and other healthcare professionals involved in the management of patients with or at risk for GA secondary to AMD.

Learning Objectives

Upon successful completion of this activity, participants should be better able to:

  • Understand the most recent findings on the pathophysiology of GA secondary to AMD as well as the detection and monitoring of disease progression using the latest imaging tools.
  • Apply the latest clinical evidence and practical approaches for differentiating the newly approved therapies for GA secondary to AMD that can aid in selecting patients who may benefit from them.
