Ocular Surface Disease and Eyelid Health: Seeing Eye to Eye

Overview

Provider Statement

This continuing education activity is provided by Vindico Medical Education

Support Statement

This activity is supported by educational grants from Tarsus Pharmaceuticals, Inc. and Thea Pharma Inc.

Activity Description

The prevalence of ocular surface disease (OSD) continues to increase, but true prevalence figures are underestimated as the condition is commonly underdiagnosed. Several factors have been identified that increase the risk of OSD, including advanced age, certain medical conditions, history of contact lens wear, refractive surgery, and the chronic use of topical ophthalmic medications containing preservatives. The eyelid margin also plays an important role in the health and integrity of the ocular surface and the preocular tear film, and lid margin disease such as meibomian gland dysfunction or blepharitis can lead to OSD or dry eye disease (DED). Furthermore, patients with Demodex blepharitis may go undiagnosed or misdiagnosed due to overlapping symptoms seen in DED and other ocular surface or lid margin disorders. A myriad of treatments is now available for the management of conditions that negatively affect the ocular surface or lid margin, but a timely and accurate differential diagnosis and optimal treatment strategy is needed to resolve disease and improve patients’ quality-of-life measures. In this CE activity, experts in the field review patient assessment and evidence-based diagnostic techniques for the differential diagnosis of OSD and associated eyelid disorders and evaluate current and emerging treatment options that reduce these conditions.

Target Audience

The intended audience for this activity is ophthalmologists and other healthcare professionals involved in the management of patients with ocular surface disease (OSD) and associated eyelid disorders.

Learning Objectives

Upon successful completion of this activity, participants should be better able to:

  • Assess patients for OSD and associated eyelid disorders, using evidence-based diagnostic modalities.
  • Incorporate treatments that reduce OSD and associated eyelid disorders.
