Activity Description

Thyroid eye disease (TED) is the most common and disfiguring orbital disease in adults. The disorder is complex, characterized by autoimmune-mediated inflammation of the orbital soft tissues, extraocular muscles, and eyelids. Most patients with TED have autoimmune hyperthyroidism, but some patients may have hypothyroidism or normal thyroid function. Many ocular surface disorders, including dry eye, have similar symptoms; as a result, differential diagnosis can be challenging. Conventional treatment has consisted of steroids and/or radiotherapy and surgery, depending on the phase of the disease, and these treatments may relieve symptoms, but they do not alter the course of the disease. With the FDA approval of a fully human immunoglobulin G-1 monoclonal antibody, teprotumumab, clinicians now have another treatment option at their disposal. In this case-based CME activity, experts in the field discuss the diagnosis and treatment of patients with TED to ensure the best outcomes for this masquerading disorder.

Target Audience

The intended audience for this activity is comprehensive ophthalmologists and other healthcare professionals involved in the management of patients with TED.

Learning Objectives

Upon successful completion of this activity, participants should be better able to:

  • Use different techniques to aid in the early and accurate identification of TED.
  • Apply evidence-based recommendations for the therapeutic management of patients with TED.
