Activity Description

Geographic atrophy (GA) is an advanced form of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and leads to progressive and irreversible loss of visual function. It is estimated to affect 5 million people globally. Patient burden is significant, and ophthalmic providers do not always recognize this burden and the significant negative impact it presents in the daily life of these patients. To date, there are no approved treatments to reverse, prevent, or reduce the rate of GA progression. However, several potential therapies, including those that target the complement cascade, are in clinical trials, and the anticipated approval of these therapies will revolutionize treatment of GA. New advances in technology hold promise in identifying and allowing for the monitoring of lesion growth. In this educational activity, expert faculty will review the most recent data regarding the role of complement dysfunction in GA; the newer technological advances that can identify, monitor, and predict geographic lesion growth; and the emerging novel therapies that may reduce lesion growth in GA secondary to AMD.

Target Audience

The intended audience for this activity is retina specialists and other health care professionals involved in the management of patients with geographic atrophy.

Learning Objectives

Upon successful completion of this activity, participants should be better able to:

  • Examine the use of newer technological advances to identify, monitor, and predict geographic lesion growth.
  • Assess the latest evidence regarding novel emerging therapies that may reduce lesion growth in geographic atrophy secondary to age-related macular degeneration.
