Activity Description

Obesity among children and young adults has escalated substantially over recent decades and now represents one of the major global health problems of the current era. Numerous mechanisms are involved in the regulation of body fat and weight, and when these are disturbed, they can lead to diverse subtypes of obesity. Genetics, developmental influences (metabolic programming or epigenetic modification), and environmental factors all play important roles. Personalized approaches to the management of obesity in children and adolescents are key to improving quality of life and long-term successful outcomes. Using short lectures and illustrative case studies, this CME activity describes some of the emerging opportunities for precision medicine and advanced diagnostic testing to enhance obesity treatment in this patient population.

Target Audience

The intended audience for the activity is endocrinologists, family practice physicians, internists, obesity specialists, and other health care professionals who manage pediatric and adolescent obesity. 

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this educational activity, the participant may be better able to:

• Describe the genetics associated with obesity from a global perspective.
• Characterize eating behavior phenotypes in relation to tailoring treatment selection.
• Assess the role of precision medicine in relation to advanced treatments for pediatric and adolescent obesity.
• Identify opportunities and barriers to optimizing pediatric and adolescent obesity management through case studies.
