Heyde's Syndrome

Heyde’s syndrome occurs in the setting of severe aortic valve stenosis and is the phenomenon of bleeding from the small intestine related to angiodysplasia.

The etiology is unclear. However, it is thought to be due to shearing of the Von Willebrand factor as it crosses the stenotic aortic valve leading to the increased risk of bleeding.

Replacing the aortic valve decreases the risk of bleeding in this scenario.
