Carotid Artery Disease

Carotid artery disease is from atherosclerosis of the carotid artery. The most site is at the proximal internal carotid artery. Microthrombi can embolize distally causing stroke.

Diagnosis is made on either carotid duplex via ultrasonography, carotid CT angiography or invasive carotid angiography. Revascularization is indicated when the luminal stenosis is > 80% and can be done either surgically or via carotid artery stenting.
