Abascal Echocardiographic Score

The Abascal echocardiographic score, also known as the Wilkins score, was first described in 1990 as a means to predict  the success of percutaneous balloon mitral valvotomy (PBMV) in the setting of rheumatic mitral valve stenosis.

If the score is 8 or less,  then a favorable outcome is likely with PBMV. If the score is > 8, then surgery is recommended. The four components of this scoring system are:

  1. leaflet mobility;
  2. leaflet thickness;
  3. subvalvular thickening; and
  4. leaflet calcification.
