Acronym: Global Anticoagulant Registry in the FIELD – Atrial Fibrillation
Purpose: Assessment of antithrombotic therapy patterns in patients newly diagnosed with nonvalvular atrial fibrillation and at least one other stroke risk factor

Summary: The percentage of patients prescribed anticoagulant therapy increased from 57.4% in 2010-2011 to 71.1% in 2014-2015. Use of non-vitamin K oral anticoagulants with or without an antiplatelet rose from 4.2% in 2010-2011 to 37% in 2014-2015. Use of vitamin K antagonists with or without an antiplatelet declined from 53.2% in 2010-2011 to 34% in 2014-2015. Use of antiplatelet monotherapy declined from 30.2% in 2010-2011 to 16.6% in 2014-2015. Predictors of non-vitamin K oral anticoagulant prescription included male sex, age 65 years or older, Asian ethnicity, dementia, use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and current smoking.
